About the event

Michael R. DeBaun, MD, MPH, serves as a Professor of Pediatrics and Medicine at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine and holds the JC Peterson Endowed Chair. He is also the founder and director of the Vanderbilt-Meharry Sickle Cell Disease Center of Excellence. With over 25 years of dedicated research, Dr. DeBaun has significantly advanced our understanding of sickle cell disease, particularly in the areas of clinical epidemiology, pathogenesis, and the treatment of strokes and silent strokes in both children and adults. His pioneering work includes serving as the principal investigator or co-leader of eight NIH or foundation-funded controlled clinical trials aimed at preventing strokes in sickle cell patients across North America, Europe, and Nigeria.

Dr. DeBaun is an esteemed member of the National Academy of Medicine, having been elected in 2009. His groundbreaking contributions to sickle cell disease research were recognized with the 2014 Ernest Beutler Prize and Lecture in Clinical Science from the American Society of Hematology. Additionally, he has been honored with two international mentoring awards: the Maureen Andrews Award from the Society of Pediatric Research in 2017 and the American Society of Hematology Clinical Science Research Mentor Award in 2019. In the same year, he was also awarded the Stanford University Medical School Lifetime Achievement Award.
